Woolworths, who have been the official food sponsor for the Rider Recovery Zone and all water points for the prestigious 8-stage Absa Cape Epic mountain bike race since 2010, are to continue their sponsorship through 2016. The race is considered one of the toughest in the world, attracting elite local and international cyclists. The sponsorship underscores Woolworths’ position as the leader in good food and a healthy lifestyle.

With most of the 1200 riders taking from six to nine hours to complete each stage, the race takes its toll on their bodies. The first 45 minutes after each day’s gruelling ride are critical in terms of recovery. To aid riders’ recovery, Woolworths prepares special meal packs containing foods specifically chosen by our dietitian according to international guidelines for peak performing endurance athletes.

Riders can also order additional ‘top up’ recovery meals through our online store.

In addition, Woolies provides extra instant ‘fuel’ at each water point along the route. Like the recovery packs, our dietitian has selected these snacks according to international guidelines for peak performance.

The recovery meals and snacks have proven to be a hit with the competitors, who voted Woolies ‘Best Debut Service’ in 2010. We’ve continued to receive many compliments from riders for our food and service every year since.
