Mountainbike master Burry Stander let a possible podium place slip to finish fifth in the seven-lap 34.08km in the men’s mountain bike event at Hadleigh Farm at the London Olympics on Sunday, and there was a clean sweep for Africa in the men’s marathon.
Starting slowly, Stander climbed through to 11th position after being in 19th place halfway into the first lap.
The final World Cup XCO race was in Val d’Isère this past weekend. Nino Schurter set a hard pace from the start and nobody was able to follow.
After the first lap Absalon, Kulhavy and Stander were already beaten, only Marco Aurelio Fontana and Florian Vogel were close behind.

Jaroslav Kulhavy charged to a solo victory on his home turf in Nove Mesto Na Morave, Czech Republic. With this win, Jaroslav secures himself the World Cup overall title for 2011. Nino Schurter rode to the silver medal, nine seconds ahead of Julien Absalon.
This past weekend saw Nino Schurter cement his place at the top of the XCO world at the Swiss Bike Days festival. 22 000 visitors showed up for the national bike festival in Solothurn.
The men’s Elite race was the highlight of the day, with the crowds lining the course in full support of local hero Burry Stander. Stander was in the lead bunch on the first lap, until a fall damaged his derailleur which effectively put him out of contention for the rest of the race.
