It was a close call for the top teams in this year’s Absa Cape Epic as they battled it out to win the penultimate stage (Stage 7) of this year’s event. The Flückiger brothers, Lukas and Mathias, attained their dream of a second stage win.

The Flűckiger brothers’ team of Lukas (26) and Mathias (21) from Switzerland repeated last year’s final stage victory by winning stage 6 of this year’s Absa Cape Epic in 4:37.22,6. They were followed by the Swiss/South African duo of Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander (Songo-Specialized by DCM) in a time of 4:40.00,8 with the German Bulls Karl Platt and Stefan Sahm close on their heels in 4:40.00,9.

Burry Stander (South Africa) & Christoph Sauser (Switzerland) riding for team Songo-Specialized by DCM claim their 3rd consecutive win, dominating the pace in the time trial stage.

For a 3rd time in a row at this years Epic the Songo-Specialized by DCM riders Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander crossed the line in first place. They completed the tough 27km course in a time of 1:05,15,0 and are now 7 minutes and 6 seconds behind the leaders, having closed the gap for the last three days.

Burry Stander (South Africa) & Christoph Sauser (Switzerland) riding for team Songo-Specialized by DCM win this stage, boosting their overall position to 3rd place.

Winning for a second time in a row, Switzerland’s Christoph Sauser and his South African team mate Burry Stander (Songo-Specialized by DCM) moved into 3rd in the overall standings. Their winning time of 3:33.01 was too fast for 2nd place German Bulls team of Karl Platt and Stefan Sahm who finished in 3:34.24. In 3rd place were the South African/Austrian duo of Kevin Evans and Alban Lakata (team MTN Qhubeka Topeak Ergon) in a time of 3:34.32.

For Stage 3 of the Absa Cape Epic riders experienced fast open roads taking the field to a short section of smooth, flowing singletrack. Riders were relieved to reach water point 1 after a leg-trashing 3km climb out of the Ceres bowl and up onto a plateau. A rough dual track then headed through some rare fynbos. Riders needed to stay alert on the challenging downhill section.
