VW gives cycle tour wheels
South Africa’s second oldest national cycling classic kicked up a gear when long-time sponsor Volkswagen Group South Africa reaffirmed its support at the official launch in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.
The 26th edition of The Herald VW Cycle Tour – which comprises the 105- kilometre feature event, several supporting races and a mountain bike challenge in and around the Addo Elephant National Park – will take place on February 5 and 6 next year.

Tour of South Africa launches inaugural 2011 route
The 2011 Tour of South Africa (ToSA) race routes have been unveiled today at the official launch of the UCI approved 2.2 category, 8 day, 7 stage road race which will take place in February next year. The Tour of South Africa will start in Gauteng and end in the winelands of Stellenbosch.

No Giro del Capo in 2011
After a 18 year run, the Giro Del Capo, one of South Africa’s oldest cycling races will not take place in 2011 due to the lack of sponsorship.
During these 18 years the prestigious Giro del Capo has provided most local cyclists with their only opportunity to compete against top international cyclists.
Organiser Dave Bellairs described the news as a black day for South African cycling.

WADA rejects Contador doping claim
A study by the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) has found no evidence to support Alberto Contador’s claim that contaminated meat was responsible for his positive doping test, a Spanish newspaper said Wednesday.
The Tour de France champion was provisionally suspended following a positive test for a tiny amount of clenbuterol, a banned weight loss/muscle-building drug.

UCI launches new iPhone application
The International Cycling Union (UCI) is constantly trying to open up new ways to offer cycling fans the best ways to follow their favourite sport. Besides television, internet, the social media Facebook and Twitter, and other communication methods, the UCI now proposes an iPhone application. It is one of the first International Sports Federations to offer this possibility.
