Buys and Beukes put up their hands as contenders for MTN Series following Epic ride
The gutsy performance by Matthys Beukes and Philip Buys (Scott Factory Racing) at the Absa Cape Epic showed that they have come of age as mountain bikers and are now able to beat the world’s best riders if they really put their minds to it.
Not only did they finish 6th overall and win the Absa African Jersey, but they also finished 2nd in stage seven and 3rd in stage four.
The only time they did not manage to get a top-ten stage finish in the Epic, was on day three when they were 13th.

2013 ABSA CAPE EPIC A HUGE SUCCESS
EARLY BIRD ENTRIES SELL OUT IN 34 SECONDS
The tenth edition of the Absa Cape Epic was again a huge success with 1 258 cyclists from 45 countries participating in this prestigious and challenging event.
1 082 riders crossed the finish line at Lourensford on Sunday, 24 March, as official Absa Cape Epic finishers.
During the 8-day stage race, more than 1 700 tents were erected in each of the four stage locations of Citrusdal, Saronsberg Wine Estate in Tulbagh, Wellington and Stellenbosch. Woolworths distributed 15 000 sandwiches, 8 000 chocolate milkshakes, 7 000 cups of coffee and 600kg of potatoes over this period. The Mediclinic team was a healthy mix of experience and clinical competence, with more than 60 Absa Cape Epics worth of experience between them. The Mediclinic team conducted 2 174 consultations over the 8 days and the wound clinic was exceptionally busy with the usual legendary saddle sores (averaged at 80 per day), but the added component this year was from the large number of heel blisters and wounds. Nearly 50 lacerations were surgically closed in the Mediclinic Race Hospital.

Team Crank – ABSA Cape Epic – Done and dusted
It feels surreal siting here in the office with the Epic done, I feel kind of lost and sad. It was a character building 8 days on the bike, with many highs and lows, or peaks and troughs as like to call them. Riding into Lourensford was the ultimate peak for me, the overwhelming feelings of pride, joy and satisfaction made the days of suffering all worth it. Arriving to the welcoming arms of friends and family is something all Epic finishers will never forget.

Absa Cape Epic – Final – Sauser and Kulhavy kings of the mountains
José Hermida and Rudi van Houts of Multivan Merida won the final stage of this year’s Absa Cape Epic in 2:22.20,2 in a sprint finish with South Africans Philip Buys and Matthys Beukes of SCOTT Factory Racing in 2:22.21,3. Nino Schurter and Florian Vogel of Scott-Swisspower MTB-Racing finished in third place in 2:26.03,6. The Swiss-Czech duo, Christoph Sauser and Jaroslav Kulhavy of team Burry Stander – SONGO finished in fourth place in 2:27.18,9. They dominated this week’s Absa Cape Epic by winning four of the eight-day challenges and proved they are kings of the mountains.

Team Crank – Absa Cape Epic stage 6 report
We have arrived in Stellenbosch, what a relief. Today was meant to be the hardest stage of the entire Epic but it turned out to be the most fun. The cool weather conditions and overnight rain made the terrain super grippy and an absolute pleasure to ride.
There was something for every rider out there today, from sublime single track, huge climbs and forestry roads. Also, the amount of support on the route was phenomenal. The weekend crowds came en masse, with cheers and celebrations for all the riders.
