Tiaan Strauss took a nasty fall during Stage 5 of the 2013 Absa Cape Epic today. His rear wheel slipped on some loose gravel as he and Cornè Krige were making their way slowly up the last steep incline of the day. The front sprocket then cut into the inside of his right calf muscle.
He and Krige managed to bandage the wound with some arm warmers to stop the bleeding so that they could finish the last 20kms of the stage in Wellington.
Strauss is currently under local anesthetic at the Medi-Clinic facilities where the wound will be stitched up.
However the injury will not keep the fierce Absa Kalahari Ferraris off the course. They are determined to keep riding tomorrow and complete the race for Big Tree Foundation. The former Springbok rugby player remains steadfast in his quest to conquer his second Absa Cape Epic!
