Reigning men’s champions Louis-Bresler Knipe and Adriaan Louw will be faced with an epic battle when they return to the Winelands the weekend of 11 – 13 November 2011 to defend their title at the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race powered by Maserati.

According to Knipe, the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race is different to anything else out there. “Riders get to experience the best of both worlds with the route featuring a combination of the most spectacular single track, massive climbs and crazy fun down hills. We will definitely need to up our game this year. It does not matter what race you attend you will always have someone giving you a proper run for your money. Our strength as a team is that we function as a team, thanks to Adriaan. The closer we get to the race the more pressure we are starting to feel, but fortunately the main competition will come from other Contego riders, so we’re keeping it in the family,” says Knipe.

For Louw, as a younger rider, winning the 2010 Wines2Whales Race was an unforgettable achievement. “I think the Wines2Whales is a complete race that requires you to perform well in all aspects of mountain biking. The routes are fun, but when you race the Wines2Whales even the fun parts such as the single tracks and up-hills become the hardest parts. As a mountain biking team, my and Louis’ riding styles complement each other. We are both very aggressive and explosive riders, but in different aspects. Our great friendship also adds to our team strength. My advice to other riders is to not be afraid of the race and take each day as it comes. The routes are so much fun, so ride it to enjoy it,” says Louw.

Due to the overwhelming response to the 2010 Race, event organisers decided to divide the 2011 event into two, differentiating between the Contego W2W Adventure and the Contego W2W Race. The Contego W2W Adventure will be more lifestyle orientated, while the Contego W2W Race will attract the racing snakes with top teams battling it out for the coveted title of Contego W2W MTB Race Champions.

Starting in the Winelands of Somerset West, riders will cross through (and over) 13 wineries, 26 private farms, six mountains, historic roads and mountain passes, nature conservation areas (including the Kogelberg Biosphere) before finishing within sight of the famous whales of Hermanus!
