XCO Course Gets Unanimous Thumbs Up from Elite Stars

The cross-country course for the 2012 RockyRoads UCI MTB World Cup Pietermaritzburg hosted its first competition at the weekend, the Momentum Health XCO Internationals, and afterwards the general consensus was that it’s a step up on the 2011 course.

“The guys have found it to be a better course than last year, with more overtaking, shorter climbs, and more technical challenges,” said course designer Nick Floros.

SA Riders Nudging Closer to Final Olympic Qualification

This weekend sees the opening round of the 2012 RockyRoads UCI MTB World Cup Pietermaritzburg presented by Shimano, from 16th to 18th March at Cascades MTB Park.

With riders earning UCI points in the three Momentum Health XCO Internationals, held in KwaZulu-Natal preceding the World Cup, our local SA riders are starting to climb the rankings and move South Africa closer to final qualification for the 2012 London Olympics.

World famous former Formula One champion Alain Prost has announced his participation in this year’s Absa Cape Epic with well-known international ski champion Sebastien Di Pasqua. Together they will take on the challenging 781km and 16 300m of climbing in the untamed African mountain bike race.

MTN-Qhubeka edges ahead of Team Bonitas to claim maiden Cycle Tour victory

Reinardt Janse van Rensburg of Team MTN Qhubeka beat a highly competitive field to claim a maiden Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour victory today. Janse van Rensburg crossed the finish line just ahead of Herman Fouche (Team Bonitas) and Jaco Venter (Team Nu Water/CTM). Ashleigh Moolman (Team Momentum Toyota) improved on her second-place finish of last year by claiming victory on the Elite Ladies category, narrowly beating Catherine Williamson (Team Bizhub-fcf) and Lynette Botha (Team Momentum Toyota).

Hunter Edges Narrow SA Champs Sprint Victory

The Mpumalanga Sport Council 2012 SA National Road Cycling and Time Trial Championships culminated with the Men’s road race in Nelspruit yesterday as they took to the streets to battle it out over 160km in perfect weather conditions.

South African road cycling sensation Robbie Hunter, who races professionally for the international Garmin-Barracuda team, achieved his goal of claiming the SA National Champion title and the green and gold stripes in a tightly contested battle!

Moolman Claims SA’s Highest Road Cycling Accolade in Sprint Finish

It was another cracker day of entertaining road cycle racing in Nelspruit yesterday for the women’s road race on the third day of the Mpumalanga Sport Council 2012 SA National Road Cycling and Time Trial Championships.

In what boiled down to an exciting sprint finish after 110 km of racing on a course consisting of 2-laps, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (Momentum Toyota) claimed gold and the SA Champion jersey, with Lise Olivier (bizhub-FCF) second and Joanna Van De Winkel (Momentum Toyota) third in the Elite Women’s category.
