Entries open for national classic

Online entries for The Herald VW Cycle Tour, which will bring down the curtain on the four-day South African Road Cycling Championships in Port Elizabeth early next year, opened last week.

The Friendly City is set to be a hotbed of cycling in February as city fathers prepare to host the national championships (2 to 5), The Herald VW Cycle Tour (5 to 6) and a stage of the inaugural Tour of South Africa (22) in February.

Mr Price Anchor Challenge

This past Saturday I took part in the inaugural Mr Price Anchor Challenge in Fish Hoek, Cape Town. The Anchor Challenge comprises of a 25km mountain bike ride, a 10km surfski paddle, a 1.5km surf swim and a 12 km beach run. There are no transitions so you rest between each event. The strong South East wind unfortunately caused the surf ski leg to be canceled but remaining 3 legs went on as usual.

Cycling classic draws SA champions

One of the biggest contingents of current South African champions is expected to assemble for the country’s second oldest national cycling classic in Port Elizabeth early next year.

The 26th edition of The Herald VW Cycle Tour, which takes place on February 6, received this shot in the arm when Cycling SA (CSA) published the official dates of the national championships (February 2 to 5) on their website earlier this week.

The cancellation of the Giro del Capo has left a gap in the South African cycling calender in the build up to the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour. Race organisers announced yesterday that the The Tour of Boland will replace the cancelled Giro del Capo.

Bradfield first president of East Cape Cycling

Cycling in the province entered a new era when the Eastern Province and Border federations recently merged to form East Cape Cycling (ECC), with Shane Bradfield as president.

Bradfield, previously vice-president of EP Cycling, was elected as the new governing body’s first president at the inaugural annual general meeting in Port Elizabeth last month.
