MTB World Cup XCO #5 – Vale di Sole, Italy

South African riders Burry Stander and Yolande Speedy showed good form this past weekend at round 5 of the MTB World Cup series. Burry finished 10th, 3:51 off the pace and Yolande finished 33rd, 8:08 off the pace.

The 6.3 kilometre course was dominated by a series of steep, climbs, which took their toll on the fields. In the men’s race, only 88 of 190 starters finished on the same lap as the winner.

In the men’s race it was Nino Schurter (Scott-Swisspower MTB-Racing) who won ahead of Julien Absalon (Orbea) with Florian Vogel (Scott-Swisspower MTB-Racing) taking the last podium position. A lead bunch of 6 formed at the front of the 190 strong field but by the last lap it was only Absalon and Schurter left, with Schurter taking the sprint. This makes it three times that Schurter has beaten Absalon in a sprint, in the past 12 months.

In the women’s race it was Polish champion Maja Wloszczowska who scored her first World Cup victory since 2008 in a thrilling battle to the line with Canadian Catharine Pendrel with Irina Kalentieva rounded out the podium. Pendrel’s 2nd place allow her to reclaim the lead in the women’s World Cup standings after the morning’s leader Eva Lechner failed to deliver on home soil and finished a distant 12th.
