The sports festivities of the Knysna Oyster festival kicked off today with the MTB race which took place in bitterly cold conditions, with occasional rain squalls providing a further challenge to the large field. The 80 KM race was dominated by Kevin Evans, who grabbed only his 2nd win in his home event.
Evans was delighted with the result after having suffered a tough year. He crashed out of the ABSA Cape Epic and broke a collarbone, and said afterwards that he was delighted with the way his recovery has progressed.
In 2nd place was MTN’s Adrian Niyonshuti, with Darren Lill returning from a good international season to grab 3rd.
The ladies race was won by Hungarian cyclist Eszter Erdelyi, ahead of the young up and coming Candice Neethling. George doctor Ishen Stopforth put her considerable local knowledge to good use to take 3rd place.
