1997 Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich has again had to deal with fresh doping allegations having been linked to doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, the man at the center of the Spanish probe Operation Puerto.
The 35 year old, who had always denied the doping allegations was unable to take part in the 2006 Tour because his T-Mobile team were suspended on the eve of the race after links were established with Fuentes. He retired in 2007 after being sacked by his team.
According to reports Ullrich paid Fuentes €80,000 and stepped up his visits ahead of the 2006 Tour.
Ullrich is my all time cycling hero and in a perfect world I would love to see him make a comeback and race again – even Lance Armstrong rates him as his fiercest rival through the years. I believe the 2010 Tour would be complete if Ullrich on the start line flexing his muscles.
