Hugo enjoys the uniqueness of the Totalsports Challenge

Top South African multi sport athlete Dan Hugo will be back in action this coming Saturday, 11 January 2014 when he takes on his 8th Totalsports Challenge presented by Liberty Medical Scheme and REHIDRAT® SPORT in Kleinmond.

“The Totalsports Challenge is very unique in both race disciplines and terrain,” said Hugo. “I do just one true multisport event like this that includes paddling. At the 2013 event there was a change in race format with the surfski discipline having to be cancelled due to strong wind conditions. This immediately changed the format of the event. I got flustered for not having a wetsuit there and made last minute bike changes for the conditions. During these changes I lost focus on nutrition and hydration and paid for the mistake later in the day”.

“Stuart Marais is a bitterly talented athlete,” continues Hugo. “I have seriously enjoyed racing head to head with him over the past two years. He has pushed me to the point of collapse and fully deserved to win the individual men’s category of the 7-disciplined Totalsports Challenge in 2013. My advice to first time competitors is to choose a stable surfski. The winds often pick up during the day and create a tough paddle at Arabella. Rather slow and steady than swimming alongside a fast boat. That said I have enjoyed seeing non-paddlers enter the Totalsports Challenge and love the experience of being on the water. With the right equipment, any tri-athlete could successfully complete this event”.

Starting in Gordon’s Bay on Saturday, 11 January 2014 participants can choose between the 7-disclipline Totalsports Challenge or the 4-discipline Totalsports Terra Firma Challenge. If taking on more than one discipline seems too daunting at this stage, there is an option to enter a team instead.
