Stage one of the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race saw a sprint finish with Erik Kleinhans and Oliver Munnik of team GT Mr Price William Simpson crossing the line seconds ahead of runners up Adriaan Louw and Louis-Bresler Knipe of team Contego Elite. Cherise Taylor and Karien van Jaarsveld of team Ladies USN were the first home in their division.
According to Kleinhans it is great having more competitive riders at this year’s race. “Our strategy for Stage One was to stay in front of the pack and pull away after the last big climb. Going into the race we knew that there would be awesome competition and it’s nice to see that the Western Cape riders are out in full force. This year’s route is fantastic with lots of new single track. Our strategy for Stage Two is pretty much the same. We’re just going to have fun,” says Kleinhans. Team GT Mr Price William Simpson crossed the finish line in 03hours34minutes20seconds. Team GT Mr Price Fairbairn Private Bank was the third team home on the day.
Team Ladies USN riders Cherise Taylor and Karien van Jaarsveld found the route to be tougher than expected. “Today’s route was stunning with the most amazing single track,” says Van Jaarsveld. “We had a bit of a mechanical problem at the start, but managed to make a comeback. It’s great riding with Cherise as we compliment each other’s riding styles and are great at motivating each other. We’re looking forward to Stage Two”. Team Ladies USN crossed the finish line in 04hours31minutes15seconds. Team Momentum Specialised Insurance came in second, while Team First Ascent Wines2Whales came in third.
Yolande de Villiers and Johan Labuschangne of team Cyclelab KTM crossed the finish line first in the mixed team category with a finishing time of 04hours21minutes29seconds. For De Villiers Stage One was awesome. “The route was absolutely fantastic. It is clear that lots of hard work went into building the stunning single tracks. I am thankful for Johan for being the best partner. He stayed calm and cool during the tough sections and kept motivating me. We’re going to do our best to stay ahead of the other mixed teams tomorrow, while enjoying every minute of the stage,” says De Villiers. Team Without Kids came in second, while team Decorton finished third.

Adriaan Louw and Louis-Bresler Knipe of team Contego Elite took no prisoners during Stage Two of the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race. Crossing the finishing line first in an impressive time of 03hours24minutes48seconds, Team Contego Elite will start Stage Three on Sunday, 14 November 2010 with a mere 36second deficit of reigning champs Oliver Munnik and Erik Kleinhans of team GT Mr Price William Simpson.
According to Louw their strategy going into Stage Two was to make it known that they were here to race. “We felt really good today. The course was perfect for mountain bike racing, the loads of single track just made it so much more enjoyable. Although we’re a young team, Louis-Bresler and I complement each other extremely well. Our plan for tomorrow is to work together as hard as possible and hopefully we’ll cross the line first,” says Louw. Team GT Mr Price William Simpson came in second, while Team Cyclelab Sub Vets finished third.
Karien van Jaarsveld and Cherise Taylor of team Ladies USN continued their winning streak completing the 78.1km route in a time of 04hours02minutes31seconds. “We are really blessed to have experienced this amazing route today,” says van Jaarsveld. “The single track was just lovely. Starting at a fast pace, Cherise and I pushed really hard. We have a great partnership, which allows us to achieve a lot of synergies. We’re really enjoying every minute of this race”. Team Momentum Specialised Insurance Ladies came in second, while First Ascent Wines2Whales finished third.
Yolande de Villiers and Johan Labuschangne of team Cyclelab KTM once again proved to be too strong for the competition. They crossed the finish time in an impressive time of 03hours52minutes. Team Decorton came in second, while Team Fair Cape Mixed finished third.

Adriaan Louw and Louis-Bresler Knipe of team Contego Elite continued their winning streak in Onrus on Sunday, 14 November 2010 when they completed Stage Three of the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race in an impressive time of 03hours33minutes30seconds. Their impressive combined race time over the three day period was 10hours33minutes39seconds, securing them the overall men’s Championship Title. Karien van Jaarsveld and Cherise Taylor of team Ladies USN were crowned overall women’s champions, while Yolande de Villiers and Johan Labuschangne of team Cyclelab KTM walked away with the title in the mixed team category.
“Stage three was tough,” says Louw. “The route featured quite a lot of flat sections, which gave the roadies an advantage and resulted in Louis and I having to work extra hard to keep up. We are both, however stronger on the hills and used these sections to our advantage. This is the first time that Louis and I rode together as a team, as we are usually racing on opposing sides. Our riding styles have complimented each other really well from stage one through to stage three. Louis is good at keeping me focused. This will definitely not be our last race together. We are very thankful to Contego for giving us the opportunity to take part in the Wines2Whales Race. We had a great time,” says Louw. Team GT Mr Price William Simpson came in second, while Team Cyclelab Sub Vets finished third.
According to Van Jaarsveld the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race tested their limits. “There definitely wasn’t a lack in competition this weekend. Cherise and I went out hard each day. It’s an awesome feeling walking away with a win after all three stages. The course is really beautiful with a great variety of terrain. This is definitely the best race that I’ve ever had the privilege to compete at in the country. We’ll definitely be back to defend our title next year,” says Van Jaarsveld. Team Ladies USN completed the three stages of the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race in a combined time in 12hours50minutes. Team Momentum Specialised Insurance Ladies came in second, while First Ascent Wines2Whales finished third.
Yolande de Villiers and Johan Labuschangne of team Cyclelab KTM obliterated the field in the mixed team category during all three stages of the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race. They completed the three day stage race in a combined time of 12hours09minutes48seconds. Team Decorton came in second, while Team Fair Cape Mixed finished third.
The 2010 Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race saw top athletes such as Christoph Sauser (Olympic medalist), Burry Stander (Under-23 World MTB), Conrad Stoltz (four time XTERRA World Champion) and Dan Hugo (South African multi-sport champion and top ranked international XTERRA athlete) take part in support of the “RIDE WITH THE CHAMPION” initiative. This initiative gave riders the opportunity to bid to compete with one of these four stars. Proceeds of the auction went towards three very worthy charities, namely the JAG Foundation (an organisation focusing on education and sport development at grassroots), Songo.info (a charity focusing on bringing sport to the Kayamandi township of Stellenbosch) and local community programmes en route.
