Rocky Mountain Bicycles has renewed its title sponsorship of the Southern Cape’s premier stage race, the Rocky Mountain Garden Route 300, which takes place in and around Knysna from February 22 to 24.
The upmarket Canadian bicycle brand, which has had a presence in South Africa for almost three years, confirmed its commitment following a sell-out event this year.
Shaun Ward from Team NuWater clinched victory in a time of 02:10:33 at the 2012 Die Burger Cycle Tour in Stellenbosch today. This follows NuWater’s team victory at the Coronation Double Century held in Swellendam last weekend.
“I am thrilled to have achieved my goals and the perfect conditions made riding a pleasure today. I have just returned from a disappointing tour of Rwanda so I wanted to do my best” he said.
South Africa’s national road cycling team stuck to their game plan and claimed their first victory at the 2012 Tour of Rwanda when Darren Lill retained the yellow jersey after the seventh stage to claim the overall win with compatriot Dylan Girdlestone finishing in second place. The Tour of Rwanda ended on Sunday in Kigali with a stage of 124,3km.
After starting in Kigali nine days earlier, international teams toured the scenic and hilly Rwandan countryside to span 876 kilometres in total, starting with a Prologue on Sunday 18th November followed by eight stages.
Team NuWater has clinched the 20th Coronation Double Century, overcoming challenging weather and a spirited challenge from Team Focus/Craft, who claimed second place. Third place in the men’s category went to TEAM.
Luthando Kaka, Team Bonitas rider who was invited by Team NuWater to join their team for the 2012 event, said: “Despite tough conditions and a hard ride, it was a great day out with the NuWater guys. I always love the vibe at this event, especially as it’s a perfect way of winding down the season ahead of our season which starts in January.”
With only days to go until the 20th Coronation Double Century team cycle challenge is set to take place in Swellendam, top teams have thrown down the gauntlet and made their intentions clear for Race Day on Saturday, 24 November.
Nu Water team captain Hannes van der Walt, who also captained last year’s winning Cape Town Market / Noble Energy team, said they are definitely going for another win this year. “We have some high-performance riders in our team this year, including 2012 Amashovashova winner Johan Rabie and Luthando Kaka, Chris Jennings and James Perry. We’ll tackle the route in two stages, namely two 100km sprints!”
