ABSA Cape Epic launches coffee table book
The Untamed African Mountain Bike Race, the Absa Cape Epic, has announced the publication of a coffee table to mark its tenth year. The book, entitled African Epic, will be available on their website, at their events, from Kalahari.net as well as through Amazon in the United Kingdom.
Written by journalist and television commentator Neil Gardiner, former cycling magazine editor and part-time adventurer Nic Lamond and editor, travel writer and novelist Justin Fox, it promises to encapsulate all the epic moments in the race since its inception in 2004.

Max Matini and Thembisile Shaun Mtintsilana return for their 2nd ABSA Cape Epic
Max Matini (25), a local bike mechanic, and Thembisile Shaun Mtintsilana (23), an assistant in a bicycle warehouse, will take on their second Absa Cape Epic in 2013, in hope of taking home the coveted Exxaro Development jersey. They will be riding as Team Pragma Trek.
The legendary mountain bike stage race, which celebrates its 10th year, will take place from 17 to 24 March, and will see riders battle the natural elements and each other while covering a total distance of 698km with 15 650m of climbing, from Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville to Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West.

Trek and Craft partner with rising SA MTB star
For 2013 Trek Bicycles South Africa and Craft South Africa will partner with one of the country’s rising mountain bike talents, James Reid. The two-year contract gives the 20-year old athlete an opportunity to continue cross country racing at the highest level. James will be chasing his dream of a U23 World Championship podium in 2013, when South Africa hosts the Mountain Bike World Championships in Pietermaritzburg in August/September.

FOUR-TIMES ABSA CAPE EPIC WINNER RETURNS FOR HIS TENTH RACE
Winner of the Absa Cape Epic in 2010, 2009, 2007 (with Stefan Sahm) and 2004 (with Mannie Heymans) and one of the world’s most prolific mountain bikers, Karl Platt (34), will return for the 10th edition of the race, which takes place from 17 to 24 March this year. The German Bulls rider is ready to take on the challenging 698km and 15 650m of climbing, from Citrusdal to Lourensford Wine Estate.

Superwoman Hannele Steyn returns for her 10th Absa Cape Epic
Hannele Steyn, a business owner, is preparing herself for the 10th edition of the legendary Absa Cape Epic mountain bike stage race, taking place from 17 to 24 March this year.
Steyn (46), who has become a cycling icon in the prestigious Absa Cape Epic, has successfully completed every race since the inaugural race in 2003, attaining an impressive second place with partner Naomi Hansen in the ladies category last year (2012).

Stellar start list for Attakwas Extreme Challenge
There will be no easing into 2013 for South Africa’s top mountain bike marathon racers. The Attakwas Extreme Challenge in Oudtshoorn is regarded by most as the toughest single-day marathon race in the country and on Saturday, the seventh edition will guarantee another brutal season-opening test.
It’s unlikely any of the Attakwas Extreme Challenge entrants will have felt comfortable resting on Christmas Day. Indeed, most probably trained. The formidable 121km route, which incorporates the unforgiving dry, stony Karoo terrain, will include just under 3000 metres of climbing, with around two thirds of that in the final half of the race.
