Earlier today top local and international XTERRA Warriors duked it out at the DUESOUTH XTERRA SA Championship presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT. Taking place at the picturesque Grabouw Country Club the participants put on a great show for the crowds of supporters. Although slightly milder conditions than last year, it was still hot and tough.

Mr Price Anchor Challenge

This past Saturday I took part in the inaugural Mr Price Anchor Challenge in Fish Hoek, Cape Town. The Anchor Challenge comprises of a 25km mountain bike ride, a 10km surfski paddle, a 1.5km surf swim and a 12 km beach run. There are no transitions so you rest between each event. The strong South East wind unfortunately caused the surf ski leg to be canceled but remaining 3 legs went on as usual.

Conrad Stoltz wins a record 4th Xterra World Title

Conrad Stoltz has won a record 4th Xterra World Title this weekend in Maui. Conrad decimated the competition on the bike leg and sailed to a 5 minute victory over his closest rival. Fellow SA Xterra star Dan Hugo was the only athlete to stay with Conrad on the bike until a mechanical put him out of contention.

Lieuwe Boonstra interview

Port Elizabeth, September 1997. The location for the first race of the 5FM/Energade Sprint Triathlon Series of the season and all of the top SA triathletes were in town to flex their muscles. The usual suspects like Raynard Tissink, Glen Gore etc had all made the journey to the Friendly City to kick off their seasons and secure some points for the overall series title.

But the talk after the race was of a young Maties student who had decimated most of the field on the cycle leg finishing in a solid second place just behind the seemingly unbeatable Tissink.

Almost thirteen years have since passed and the name Lieuwe Boonstra is now synonymous with triathlon in South Africa. An internationally rated Xterra specialist, we were fortunate enough to speak to the charismatic Boonstra who juggles training and competition with a full-time job and busy life outside of the sport.
