Participants in The Herald VW Cycle Tour will have a chance to show their true mettle when they take on the new Ultimate Quest in Port Elizabeth and Addo from February 1 to 3.
The Ultimate Quest is designed to reveal the supreme cyclist overall across both the 80km Extreme mountain bike challenge on the Saturday and 106km Classic road race on the Sunday.
With over R400 000 in prizes and some major changes in store, organisers are aiming to attract cyclists from across the country when The Herald VW Cycle Tour takes place in Addo and Port Elizabeth from February 2 to 3.
According to event coordinator Linda Harwood, the 2013 edition would see bigger incentives, better routes and a brand-new race village, as well as the addition of the Ultimate Quest super-category.
Liqui-Fruit will be the official juice sponsor of the 2013 Absa Cape Epic when 1200 riders take on a gruelling 800km over eight days from 17-24 March in the Western Cape.
Liqui-Fruit has simultaneously announced its title sponsorship of the Vineyard races which take place on the final day of the Absa Cape Epic at Lourensford Wine Estate. Known as the Liqui-Fruit Cape Times Vineyard races, these events are open to the public and are far less extreme. Apart from a 29km and 56 km Mountain Bike Race, there will also be a 6km and 15km trail run.
Rocky Mountain Bicycles has renewed its title sponsorship of the Southern Cape’s premier stage race, the Rocky Mountain Garden Route 300, which takes place in and around Knysna from February 22 to 24.
The upmarket Canadian bicycle brand, which has had a presence in South Africa for almost three years, confirmed its commitment following a sell-out event this year.
Shaun Ward from Team NuWater clinched victory in a time of 02:10:33 at the 2012 Die Burger Cycle Tour in Stellenbosch today. This follows NuWater’s team victory at the Coronation Double Century held in Swellendam last weekend.
“I am thrilled to have achieved my goals and the perfect conditions made riding a pleasure today. I have just returned from a disappointing tour of Rwanda so I wanted to do my best” he said.
